Traditional dentures have come a long way from those that we used to see soaking in a cup in our grandparents’ bathrooms. But many people still find them frustrating. It’s an adjustment. If that sounds like you, Drs. Ricardo Andrade and Denisse Montalvo at Dynamic Dental in Sacramento, California, can talk with you about implant-retained dentures.
Implant-retained dentures are removable dentures that snap onto titanium posts implanted in your jawbone. They come out for cleaning, but they’re locked down for stability when they’re in your mouth.
The main difference is how they stay put in your mouth. But there is a lot more to it than that.
Yes, they really are. Regular dentures press down every time you chew your food. That’s what causes sores and irritation. The movement.
But also, your jawbone starts shrinking because it’s not getting the stimulation it needs. Your dentures will become looser and even more uncomfortable unless you keep getting them adjusted. Implant-retained dentures remove all of that drama.
It depends heavily on whether you’re getting an upper or a lower set of dentures. For the lower jaw, we usually place two or four implants. But the upper jaw typically needs four to six because the bone density is different up there.
Very secure. Your dentures snap onto the implants with attachments that keep them firmly in place. When you’re eating or talking, you won’t feel them moving around and lifting up and down when you’re chewing tough food.
The timeline depends on anything you need to have done before you can have your implant surgery. If you don’t have enough bone density, Drs. Andrade or Montalvo will recommend a bone graft. That adds a few months because the bone graft has to heal.
The implants need about three to six months to fuse with the bone. After that, we will fit your final dentures. Start to finish, you’re looking at anywhere from a few months to close to a year.
