When you’re living with TMJ disorders and sleep apnea, it can have a huge impact on your quality of life. From exhaustion during the daytime to chronic jaw pain, these conditions can be debilitating. Fortunately, when you understand the link between the two, Drs. Ricardo Andrade and Denisse Montalvo at Dynamic Dental can help.
People who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) repeatedly stop breathing when they’re sleeping. This is caused by blocked airways. TMJ disorders are malfunctions of the temporomandibular joint, the joint connecting your jaw to your skull.
In many cases, the two issues are connected. TMJ dysfunction can cause your jaw to fall backward when asleep, aggravating airway obstruction.
If you have any of these symptoms, you may need to be evaluated for OSA and/or TMJ disorders.

Even if you suspect you have sleep apnea or TMJ disorder, your official diagnosis is important because it can also help identify the root cause. Diagnosing OSA may involve a sleep study. For TMJ disorder, a diagnosis usually involves a physical exam, analysis of your bite, and imaging.
Experts like Dr. Ricardo Andrade and Dr. Denisse Montalvo use advanced tools to clearly visualize your conditions. Then, a personalized treatment plan is created for you.
TMJ and sleep apnea appliances involve wearing a custom-made device that gently positions your jaw when you’re sleeping. People with OSA and TMJ find that an oral appliance can keep their airways open while also reducing the strain on the jaw. Oral appliances are less intrusive and more comfortable than a CPAP machine.
In addition to your oral appliance therapy, you can make some lifestyle changes that support your treatment.
Ongoing care and monitoring are essential for effective TMJ and sleep apnea treatment. The team monitors your progress at follow-up appointments to fine-tune your oral appliance as needed. New symptoms are also addressed. Staying consistent with your appointments can help you avoid any setbacks.
