Most people take sleep for granted. But for those who are living with obstructive sleep apnea, sleep feels like a battleground. If that sounds familiar, Drs. Ricardo Andrade and Denisse Montalvo of Dynamic Dental in Sacramento, California, may have a solution for you: the Silent Nite® Oral Appliance.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the muscles in your throat relax too much while sleeping. Your airway becomes blocked, preventing you from getting the deep sleep your body needs to rest. OSA often leads to poor sleep quality, daytime drowsiness, and even memory issues.
The signs of sleep apnea aren’t always obvious, so it’s worth checking with a professional at our office. The most important thing is to make an appointment as soon as you notice these symptoms. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious health issues, such as heart disease.
The most common symptoms of sleep apnea include:
Your diagnosis starts with a sleep evaluation. If sleep apnea is confirmed, one of the dentists at our office may recommend oral appliance therapy. This option is less bulky than CPAP machines and fits like a mouthguard. The custom-made oral appliance gently shifts your jaw to keep your airway open when you’re asleep.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is a condition that affects the joint connecting your skull to your jaw. It causes jaw pain, clicking, and/or popping noises, or jaw stiffness. If you live with this, you may be grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw while sleeping. Just like sleep apnea, TMJ disorder can disrupt your sleep.
Because the two conditions can disrupt sleep, a custom oral appliance can sometimes address both problems simultaneously. Oral appliances are custom-made to fit your mouth and position your jaw to prevent airway collapse and jaw clenching.
Each person’s sleep apnea is different. Various factors come into play, such as your daily routine and medical history. That’s why Drs. Andrade and Montalvo take the time to understand your condition and symptoms fully before recommending treatment.
